Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay, born August 24, 1972 in Long Beach California. As a child DuVernay's Aunt Denise inspired her love of artistic expression and creative thinking. Her aunt worked the night shifts as a nursing assistant, so she could follow her passion of theater and literature in the daytime. DuVernay immediately was captivated when she showed her the 1961 West Side Story film. DuVernay realized after watching her mother's examples of how art could serve as an activist vehicle. DuVernay was taught to be socially mindful through her mother. DuVernay had her summers spent in Lowndes County Alabama, where her father was born and was raised. Her father recalled the civil rights marches over the Edmund Pettus Bridge and the Selma town that was nearby, Alabama. DuVernay used the summers she spent in Alabama to inspire her next film, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay received her graduation certificate at Saint Joseph High School, Lakewood California in 1990. After graduation, she studied at the University of California Los Angeles where she earned degrees in English as well as African American study. DuVernay developed an interest in broadcast journalism as a student. DuVernay began her career working as an intern at CBS News during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalled being assigned to sit at the house of a member of the jury as well as examine their junk. Her tasks to complete left her unhappy and so, after deciding not to continue in journalism, she moved on into the industry of publicity. DuVernay began working in a small studio as a junior publicist right after college. The company she founded for her own PR, The DuVernay Agency was founded in 1999. In addition to PR her agency also created a variety of marketing and lifestyle platforms, such as The Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective, Urban Eye and HelloBeautiful.
